Why You Should Job Search (Even When You LOVE Your Job)

You never usually hear someone who’s looking for a new opportunity say they love their job. I mean, after all, if you love your job so much then why would you look for anything else? There are many reasons to job search, and according to the Adecco Group the top 5 reasons are: toxic corporate culture, job insecurity, high levels of innovation, failure to recognise performance & poor responses to Covid 19.

But what if you can’t relate to any of that? What if your company culture is great, your boss rewards you and you feel secure? Why even bother to look elsewhere?

Well, with many things in life, situations can change out of nowhere. You may get a new boss who mixes things up in all the wrong ways, or the company may go through financial struggles and redundancies, or your salary might not keep pace with the rising cost of living. Of course, we don’t want to scare you, and if you love your job that’s great – but keeping an eye out on better opportunities will help your career in the long run, and we have 5 reasons why.

It helps you stay on top of your networking.

Networking is one of the best ways to land your dream role. As the saying goes: It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. If you answer messages from recruiters in your LinkedIn DM’s, or even reach out to employers about certain opportunities they have on offer – you have nothing to lose, and perhaps a new exciting role to gain.

Even if the opportunity isn’t for you, you’ve connected with someone who might have the perfect role for you in the future when your situation changes.

Normalising job interviews will make your more confident in the long run.

Are you a nervous wreck when it comes to interviews? If you make interviewing part of your itinerary, by the time you find your dream job you’ll be a pro interviewer. It’ll just feel like another meeting at work, and you’ll shine your brightest when you’re feeling both confident and relaxed.

Each interview is one step closer to finding your dream role.

It’s a bit like Tinder – a numbers game.

The more employers you meet, the more you’ll realise what you want, and most importantly what you don’t want.

This will help tailor your search – and while you’re happy at your job, you can have a much more specific job search, instead of feeling like you need to take whatever role comes your way out of desperation. It can also help you with your current job, if you’re going to less doctor and dental appointments!

You’ll find it much easier to negotiate when you’re secure in a job you love.

It’s difficult to fight for what you’re worth if you have no job or feel like you’re being pushed out of your current one. Negotiating whilst working anyway is perfect because if they don’t match your expectations, you can part ways with them and stay with your employer until you find a company that does.

You have time on your hands to find your ultimate dream role.

Less of a rush = less mistakes = a much lower chance of having to job hop.

If you’re rushing from one role to the next, and make a mistake, it could end up hindering your career. Don’t worry, we all have that one company we backed by mistake on our CV that we either erase completely, or brush over quickly in interviews, but if you find yourself rushing into each and every opportunity (and then quickly running for the exit), you may look like a job hopper.

Having time to find the role where you can flourish is such an advantage – and one you should be taking even while you love your job!
