4 Ways to Improve Your Situation If You Hate Your New Job

Hate your new job? At Beam we’re here to tell you that’s completely ok!

You are not alone – and we can back this up with stats. A report back in 2017 from a CareerBuilder survey reported that 66% of workers have, at some point, accepted a job and then discovered it wasn’t the right move. A lot of the time, this isn’t on you.

This could be down to micromanagement, the job not matching the initial job description, or a toxic work environment. All things you’d find hard to clock onto in an initial screening or a couple of interview rounds.

So firstly, take the blame off yourself – it’s common, and if you play your cards right, it could be a stepping-stone to greater things.

Our first top tip is to not quit just yet. Read our advice first, and then decide which path you’d like to go down.

  1. Identify the issue:

Is it one of the issues mentioned above? Or something completely different? Is it as simple as needing some time to adjust? Identifying the problem can help you realise how severe the issue is, and if you need to run out that exit door or hold on to see if things get better.

For example, if you’re feeling a little lonely or anxious after leaving your old work friends you may want to stick it out and familiarise yourself with the team. It’s always good to remind yourself of the feelings you had when you first started your last job.

We can all agree starting a new role can feel like season 6 of the office, but sometimes a late character to spice things up is what people need!

If the issue goes much deeper, for example you have issues with the company values, and you can’t compromise your beliefs, we’d recommend sitting down with HR to discuss your struggles. In some cases, you may just want to leave, but in this current climate it’s much harder to quit your job on a whim. We’d recommend seeing if you can job hunt whilst at your current company. This is only if you’re mentally up for it though – don’t forget that your mental health is of the upmost importance!

  • Look for the positives:

As mentioned above, the majority of us can’t pack our bags and leave with nothing else lined up – which can take a toll on us! Looking for ‘the positives’ can change our mindset, and you might even find yourself with a spring in your step again!

Thinking about what you do like will help you when you interview for other roles. Maybe you’re a marketer and you’ve decided you loath social media but love email marketing. Or maybe you’re a consultant who’s realised you dislike unrealistic KPI’s but love your clients and candidates. This is a huge benefit to finding a company right for you.

  • Talk to your manager:

It costs a lot for an employer to hire and train staff, so the likelihood is they’ll want to keep you and make you happy. They may appreciate your honesty, and you never know, it might even fix the issue you have.

The old saying goes, if you don’t ask you don’t get. What’s the worst that could happen?

  • Network:

This best thing you can do is network, network, network! Meet people at events, post on LinkedIn and get yourself involved in every conversation that you can. Offer advice and help others. Before you know it, you’ll know someone, who knows someone, who knows someone, that’s hiring for a role perfect for you.

On LinkedIn there’s plenty of ways to get yourself out there without your employer knowing you’re looking elsewhere. You can even click the open to work option and hide it from everyone in your current business.

Pro tip: We’d recommend always talking positively about your current business on LinkedIn. Show the world how you’re making a difference. You’ll find lots of employers are watching – and you’ll never know when their next hire is!
