“We can recruit ourselves. AI can do that. So where does a recruiter add value?”
It’s a fair question, particularly for an SME where every investment needs to count. AI is already making a real difference, especially in volume recruitment. But some hires need a more bespoke approach.
For a growing SME, the right appointment can have a significant impact. Getting it right means looking beyond the job description. What has the business been through? What has worked, and what hasn’t? Where is it heading? What does the team need from this person?
It also means listening carefully to candidates: exploring their values and motivators, noticing where they sound confident or hesitant, and giving honest feedback throughout the process.
AI can be a powerful tool, but it doesn’t replace the human judgement that comes from context and conversation. With 26 years in recruitment, I’ve seen how genuine understanding can shape the outcome of an important hire. Sometimes, it’s even in the tone of a response.
For an SME, that can make the difference between filling a vacancy and finding someone who can help move the business forward.
And yes, AI created the image but the human touch still matters.
When you’re making an important hire, what do you most want your recruiter to understand about your business?
