Is Your Hiring Process Filtering Out Great Talent?

This week is Neurodiversity Celebration Week  a global initiative aimed at raising awareness and challenging the stereotypes around neurological differences such as ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia and more.

It’s a great reminder that different ways of thinking, learning and processing information are not deficits  they’re differences. And in business, those differences can bring huge strengths: creativity, pattern recognition, problem-solving, innovation and deep focus.

But it also raises an important question for employers:

Are our recruitment processes actually fit for purpose?

Many hiring processes were designed around a very narrow definition of “the ideal candidate”. Think about it:

• Long, jargon-heavy job descriptions
• Interview processes that prioritise quick verbal responses
• Unstructured panel interviews
• Vague expectations during onboarding

For some neurodivergent candidates, these steps can create unnecessary barriers meaning businesses may miss out on brilliant talent.

A few simple adjustments can make a big difference:

✔ Clear, concise job descriptions
✔ Structured interviews with consistent questions
✔ Sharing interview topics or questions in advance
✔ Offering alternative ways for candidates to demonstrate skills
✔ Providing clarity and structure during onboarding

None of this lowers the bar. It simply removes obstacles that don’t relate to someone’s ability to do the job.

For growing SMEs especially, widening how we think about hiring can unlock talent that competitors might be overlooking.

Neurodiversity awareness isn’t just about inclusion.
It’s about building stronger, more innovative teams.

This week is a good opportunity to pause and ask:

Are our hiring processes designed to identify talent or filter it out?
